Education: Empowering the Next Generation
Education is the cornerstone of sustainable development, and for the Katkari community, it is a pathway out of intergenerational poverty. Our initiative is designed to create opportunities, remove barriers, and ensure meaningful learning outcomes for children.
Our Goals
- Increase School Attendance
Ensure children attend school regularly by addressing barriers such as discrimination, migration, and lack of parental awareness. - Strengthen Foundational Skills
Equip children with basic literacy and numeracy skills to build a strong academic foundation and reduce dropout rates. - Support Existing Schooling Systems
Strengthen and align with the existing government schooling system to ensure sustainability and long-term impact. - Transform Parental Attitudes
Increase parents’ knowledge about the importance of education and address fears, stigmas, and misconceptions. This helps create a supportive environment for children to thrive academically. - Track Individual Progress
Monitor each child’s educational journey, focusing on attendance, performance, and learning outcomes to tailor interventions effectively.
Our Approach
- Dedicated Teachers in Every Hamlet
Six teachers, identified in collaboration with Donate Aid Society, visit all eight hamlets daily, dedicating two hours to working with children. They:
- Gather children, lead prayers, and engage in games.
- Teach group-based literacy and numeracy tailored to children’s levels.
- Celebrate festivals to build community spirit.
- Maintain detailed individual records, including school and center attendance, literacy, and numeracy levels.
- Tailored Learning Programs
Our program is designed to meet each child’s specific learning needs. For example, children were initially divided into four literacy groups based on their existing knowledge and skills. This segmentation allowed teachers to provide focused attention and track progress more effectively. As children progress, their groups and learning activities are adjusted to ensure continuous development. This structured approach ensures focused teaching that adapts as children progress, fostering continuous improvement.
- Continuous Teacher Training and Monitoring
Teachers undergo regular training sessions to refine their teaching methods and adapt to new challenges. Ongoing monitoring ensures that they maintain high-quality instruction and that the program evolves with the needs of the children. FLN training was provided to our teachers by Doorstep School.
- Improving School Attendance
Teachers actively work to increase school attendance by:- Helping children get ready and walking them to school when necessary.
- Building confidence to reduce barriers like discrimination.
- Encouraging better presentation and preparation for school.
- Engaging Parents to Build Knowledge
Surveys and interactions with parents help identify their fears, stigmas, and misconceptions about education. Tailored awareness sessions aim to:- Break down barriers and stigmas related to schooling.
- Build trust in the education system.
- Foster a long-term commitment to supporting their children’s education.
- Data-Driven Monitoring
Teachers track and analyze attendance and performance data to design targeted interventions and measure program effectiveness.
- Collaborating with Schools
Aligning our efforts with the government schooling system ensures that our programs complement rather than compete with existing structures, creating a sustainable model of support.
By combining clearly defined goals with a structured, child-focused approach and continuous teacher development, our education initiative empowers children and their families, paving the way for lasting change.
